MY DAUGHTER'S SECRET

When 17-year-old Justine Dysert (NINA DOBREV) gets into the car one night with her 20-year-old “bad boy” boyfriend Brent, and his brother Reggie, 20s, she has no idea that her life is about to change forever. The boys stop in the alley behind the jewelry store where her mother works, put on ski masks, and go into the store to rob it, leaving Justine in the car as the look-out. Shocked and confused, Justine makes the decision to stay in the car instead of getting out and running…a decision she’ll soon come to regret.

The ill-planned heist goes terribly wrong and Reggie, in a state of panic, shoots the store manager who also happens to be the owner’s son, Albert, 40s. Justine and the boys escape with several thousand dollars worth of jewelry, leaving a critically injured man on the floor.

When Justine realizes they shot a close friend of Justine’s mother, Denise (JENNIFER GRANT), late 30s, Justine is torn between telling her mother the truth—a truth that will inevitably send the boy she loves more than anything to prison—and her allegiance to her first real boyfriend. Believing what Brent and Reggie tell her—that she was as culpable in the robbery as they were and will surely go to prison too—Justine decides to keep silent. But hiding a terrible, dark truth changes a person, and the first one to realize this change is Denise.

Denise sees her daughter’s emotional state begin to deteriorate, but has no idea what is wrong or how to help her. As the police investigation of the robbery begins to lead toward Brent and Reggie, and Albert’s condition worsens, Justine spirals downward into her own hell. Denise does everything a mother can think of to try to figure out what’s going on with her only daughter, but Justine becomes increasingly distant… to everyone, including Brent, and the boys start to realize that the girl is turning into a liability.

Denise, through her own investigative work, finds out that Justine was indeed involved in the robbery. She confronts her daughter, and Justine, about to have a nervous breakdown, confesses everything that happened that night. Denise begs Justine to go to the police and tell them what happened…but by that time, it’s too late. Reggie has made the decision that Justine—the only person whose testimony could send them to prison—must be eliminated, and if Denise gets in the way of his plan to make Justine disappear, she’ll be eliminated as well.
